Kylie Jenner is Trolling All of Us

Kylie Jenner is pregnant—or is she? If you’ve been reading the entertainment headlines lately, you’ve likely seen conflicting reports. With articles ranging from The Billboard‘s “Kylie Jenner Pregnant With Travis Scott’s Baby” to Elite Daily‘s “5 Clues Kylie Jenner Is Not Pregnant, In Case You’ve Been Wondering,” it’s hard to know who or what to believe—and maybe that’s the point.

The Kardashian-Jenner clan are not exactly strangers to the limelight. Thanks to their wildly successful reality TV show, we’ve been able to keep up with the Kardashians for over a decade now. Even with steadily declining viewership, over a million people still tune in each week. In addition, at least 1.1 million caught the premiere of the newest Keeping Up with the Kardashians‘ spin-off, Life of Kylie. The show, which focuses mainly on Kylie Jenner, is by no means a success. Its first season viewership parallels the thirteenth season viewership of the original Kardashian show. That probably doesn’t much matter to Jenner.

In June, Jenner became the youngest star to place on the Forbes‘ list of 100 Highest Paid Female Celebrities. At #59 and at only nineteen years old, Jenner may have nowhere to go but up—even if her show fails. According to Women’s Wear Daily, Kylie Jenner’s company, Kylie’s Cosmetics, is well on its way to being worth $1 billion or more by 2020. In addition to her line of cosmetics and television appearances on Keeping Up with the Kardashians and Life of Kylie, Time.com outlines, “Jenner has several endorsement deals, including one with Puma…She also shares a clothing line with her high-fashion model sister Kendall Jenner.” Of course, Kylie Jenner isn’t just good at selling makeup and “acting,” she’s also quite good at keeping herself in the headlines. Alas, the pregnancy rumors.

Jenner is certainly not the first celebrity to be labeled pregnant by the media. She also certainly wouldn’t be the first—or the last—to confirm, deny, or plead the fifth regarding the pregnancy rumors. Yet, Jenner may very well be the first to try to do all three at the same time.

When the news first broke of Jenner’s alleged pregnancy on September 22, Jenner didn’t address it. Then, within a few days, Jenner began posting only older photographs (“throwbacks”) of herself on Instagram. Fans began to speculate. “Throwback to when you weren’t pregnant,” one Instagrammer commented. It wasn’t long before TMZ reported on Jenner’s $70,000 baby-shopping spree, adding fuel to the proverbial fire.

Since then, Jenner has taken matters more into her own hands. Via Snapchat, Jenner posted a picture of cinnamon buns. A clue to signify a bun in the oven? Jenner continued by posting a picture of cell phone cases—one blue, two pink—with the caption, “Which one? I’m thinking blue…” Twitter user @jmeichs tweeted, “This is one hundred percent Kylie’s way of doing a gender reveal.” Others shared her sentiment.

Just as fans started to really believe the pregnancy was more than just a rumor, Jenner posted a Snapchat photo that includes a box of tampons, claims The Daily Mail photoshopped photos of her (The Daily Mail denies this allegation), and also added to Snapchat a full-body shot of herself alongside half-sister Khloe Kardashian, who, as it turns out, is also rumored to be pregnant. Of course, the photo would discredit the pregnancy rumors surrounding both Kylie and Khloe…if only they weren’t both wearing baggy black sweat suits. And so, around and around we go: is she, or isn’t she, pregnant?

Despite fans’ initial disinterest in watching her life play out on TV, they are certainly interested now. Perhaps this is Jenner’s way of generating buzz and scoring a second season for the poorly-rated Life of Kylie. Maybe Jenner just wants to have a little fun trolling her fan base, or maybe she just loves all of the attention—who knows. Pregnant or not, one thing is certain—she is successfully continuing the Kardashian-Jenner legacy. Just what is that legacy? Kris Jenner described it best in her 2011 memoir: “[taking] these fifteen minutes of fame and turn[ing] them into thirty.”
