Remember when Rush Limbaugh called Sandra Fluke a “slut” and the media had a giant panic attack, and President Obama called to apologize and to thank her for all her great work deceiving women into thinking they could not access contraception and promoting a regulation that has resulted in the biggest religious liberty lawsuit in American history? Of course – it was in the headlines for months.
Remember when SNL had Miley Cyrus portray Michele Bachmann as a degraded hooker from somewhere straight out of Dante because they didn’t like her role in the government shut down, and all the feminists got so upset and everyone rushed to defend her dignity? No. Of course not.
The media cares about the dignity of women on the left, not the right, which means they don’t really care about female dignity at all. It’s really getting old. Back during the Fluke fiasco, women on both sides of the aisle wrote about the reality that despite all of our society’s advances for women, a woman’s sexual integrity is still fair game when the mud starts flinging.
Peggy Noonan on the right wrote a column after Rush’s idiotic and deplorable comments in which she mapped out “America’s Real War on Women.” She wrote:
“In this war, leaders who are women are publicly demeaned and diminished based on the fact that they are women. They are the object of sexual slurs, and insulted in sexual terms. The words used are vulgar, and are meant to tear down and embarrass.”
She points out that this is a relatively new phenomenon. Eleanor Roosevelt was a lightning rod but no one was calling her sexual slurs. She was never booed at a public event, unlike our First Lady. Kirsten Powers on the left wrote a similar piece, but more pointedly called on “the army of swine on the left” to stop the misogyny too. She was basically the only person to do so.
In my frustration over the lopsided outcry over verbal misogyny, I shared the Huffington Post video of the SNL skit showing Miley as Michele on my Facebook and asked why this was okay to do to Republican women but not Democrat women. The only response I got was an email from an older man basically saying boo hoo with a link to…yes…a Huffington Post article decrying sexually demeaning buttons about Hillary Clinton. “Anti-hillary buttons are just disgusting,” the headline reads. Facepalm.
Then I see a Facebook post from a friend, saying his daughter just asked the question, “Dad, How come there aren’t any women on the dollar bill?” I look around the world and wonder the same thing. I see a woman leading the most prosperous nation in Europe. I see Britain honoring a woman as one of its greatest Prime Ministers. I see African nations where the majority of government bodies are women. And then I look at America and see Miley Cyrus twerking, pretending to be a Congresswoman, and buttons mocking Hillary Clinton’s breasts.
Maybe the reason America doesn’t have more women in public life is because here we are all sluts, although only half of us apparently are worth defending.
